FAQ

Common Questions About Hiring a NYC Lawyer

How much does a consultation cost?

Your initial consultation with Yazdi Law is completely free. We use this meeting to understand your situation, explain the relevant law, and help you decide whether legal representation makes sense for your circumstances. There is no obligation to retain us after the consultation.

What areas of New York do you serve?

Our office is located in Midtown Manhattan at 261 Madison Avenue, and we represent clients throughout all five boroughs of New York City — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island — as well as Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. For immigration matters, we represent clients nationally regardless of where they reside.

Do you offer services in languages other than English?

Yes. Yazdi Law provides legal counsel in both English and Farsi (Persian). Our attorneys can conduct consultations, review documents, and communicate case updates in Farsi for clients who prefer it. This is particularly valuable for immigration and family law matters involving the Iranian-American community.

How quickly can I speak with an attorney?

We strive to respond to all inquiries within 24 hours. For urgent matters — particularly personal injury cases where evidence preservation is time-sensitive, or immigration matters with approaching deadlines — we offer same-day or next-day consultations when available. Call (917) 565-7286 for immediate assistance.

Do I have to pay anything upfront for a personal injury case?

No. Yazdi Law handles personal injury cases on a contingency fee basis under New York Judiciary Law § 474-a, which means you pay no attorney fees unless we recover compensation for you. We advance all costs associated with investigating and pursuing your claim. Fees are only owed if there is a recovery.

What types of cases does Yazdi Law handle?

Yazdi Law represents clients in four practice areas: personal injury (car accidents, construction accidents, slip and fall, medical malpractice, and wrongful death), immigration (family-based green cards, employment-based petitions, asylum, naturalization, and deportation defense), matrimonial and family law (divorce, child custody, spousal support, and orders of protection under the Domestic Relations Law), and real estate and landlord-tenant matters (residential and commercial closings, lease disputes, and eviction defense in NYC Housing Court). Because these areas frequently overlap — for example, a divorce that affects an immigration case tied to marriage — having a single firm that handles multiple practice areas allows coordinated representation rather than referring each issue to separate counsel.

What should I bring to my first meeting with a lawyer?

For a personal injury consultation, bring any accident or police reports, photographs of the scene or your injuries, medical records or bills, and insurance information. For immigration matters, bring your passport, any prior visa or USCIS correspondence, Forms I-94 or I-20, and receipt numbers for any pending petitions. For a divorce consultation, bring your marriage certificate, any existing court orders, and recent financial documents such as tax returns and pay stubs. For real estate matters, bring the contract of sale, lease, or any correspondence from your landlord or management company. If you do not have these documents readily available, the consultation can still proceed — we will identify what is needed and help you obtain it.

Can one law firm handle both my immigration case and my divorce?

Yes, and there are practical reasons to do so. When immigration status depends on a marriage — as with marriage-based green cards or I-751 conditional residence petitions — a divorce can directly affect the immigration case. An attorney who handles both practice areas can coordinate the timing and strategy of each matter to avoid jeopardizing the other. For example, filing for divorce before removing conditions on a green card requires a different USCIS filing approach (an I-751 waiver) than filing after. Similarly, if a spouse qualifies for relief under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the immigration and family law strategies must be aligned. Yazdi Law handles both immigration and matrimonial matters, which allows this kind of cross-practice coordination.

Does Yazdi Law handle cases outside of New York City?

For personal injury, matrimonial, and real estate matters, Yazdi Law represents clients throughout New York City (all five boroughs), as well as in Nassau County, Suffolk County, and Westchester County. These cases are filed in New York State Supreme Court, Family Court, or NYC Housing Court depending on the matter. For immigration cases, we represent clients nationwide because immigration law is federal — petitions are filed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regardless of where the client resides. Our Midtown Manhattan office near Grand Central Terminal is accessible to clients from the surrounding counties by Metro-North and the subway system, and we also offer phone and video consultations.
